FUT Hair Transplant

Hair transplants date back to at least 1939 in Japan. In the early days, the results usually looked unnatural and gave a plug-like appearance.

It wasn’t until surgeons first started transplanting individual hair follicles (also known as follicular units) in 1995 that hair transplants started giving natural-looking results.

FUT surgery, a surgeon cuts a strip of skin from the back or side of your head and extracts individual hair follicles. These follicles are then inserted into the balding parts of your scalp. The surgery works best at covering a receding hairline caused by male pattern baldness.

FUT surgery leaves a scar at the site of hair removal. The scar will fade over time but is permanent. The size of the scar depends on how many hair follicles were used during surgery. The scar is generally hidden by your hair, but it may be visible if you keep your hair short.

The average cost of FUT hair transplant may be between $4,000 and $10,000. The price may be even higher at some clinics.

FUT surgeries generally takes about 4 to 8 hours to complete, but the exact time can vary depending on the number of hair follicles being transplanted. It can take 6 to 9 months to see the full results of the surgery.

How follicular unit transplantation works

Is FUT Right For You?

During FUT, a surgeon cuts a strip of skin from your scalp, usually from the back of your head. The exact size of the strip depends on the number of follicles needed to cover bald spots. The strip usually doesn’t exceed 1 to 1.5 centimeters (0.4 to 0.6 inches) wide. Once the individual follicles are removed from the strip, they’re re-inserted into your scalp.

Hair transplant surgeries take between 4 and 8 hours. FUT surgery is generally quicker than FUE surgery. Most people stay awake during the surgery with a local anesthesia that numbs their scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about your hair transplants

1. What is an FUE hair transplant?

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is a minimally invasive hair transplant method that allows the removal of individual follicles from your donor area without a scalpel incision, and then implants them where you need more hair coverage.

2. Will people know I have had a hair transplant procedure?

The ARTAS® system allows a minimally invasive procedure that is virtually undetectable. Unlike previous methods of hair restoration, there is no need for the surgical removal of a strip of scalp from the back and sides of the head. So, there is no linear scar after surgery, and no need for stitches or staples to close the wound. The benefit is a significantly shortened recovery time.

3. Do I have to shave my head to have a hair restoration procedure?

Both the ARTAS® system and the manual FUE method can be done by getting a short trim. Trimming your hair in the donor area allows the ARTAS® system to accurately visualize, track, and harvest each grouping of hairs. You will receive detailed instructions from your doctor on the required length your hair needs to be before the procedure.

4. Does the ARTAS® procedure hurt?

As part of the ARTAS® procedure, the scalp is locally anesthetized until numb. If you still feel any pain during the procedure, a physician will decide if it’s necessary to administer additional anesthesia to reduce discomfort. The patient typically feels no pain. Some patients can experience minor discomfort and swelling post-procedure, which subsides in one to three days.

5. How soon will I see results?

Transplanted hair grows naturally in phases. New hairs are seen about three months after the procedure and will continue to increase over the course of a full year. At approximately six months, you will enjoy a noticeable improvement and after a full year, you will see full results. However, individual results and timelines may vary for each patient.

6. How long will the hair last?

While hair loss may not necessarily stop after transplantation, ARTAS®, FUE and FUT procedures use your own permanent growing hair, typically from the back of your head, and your physician then implants this hair to the thinning areas of your scalp. As this hair might not be susceptible to the conditions that cause male pattern baldness, transplanted hair will typically last a lifetime. Your doctor will be able to assess your treatment options and discuss what you can expect.
